• Born & bred in the East of England. John’s family can be traced back 14 generations to 1550.
    • Generations of Flacks were farmers on the Essex / Cambridgeshire border.
    • Lives in the heart of Eastern England with wife Louise & Sussex Spaniel Noggins.
    • Four grown up sons, the eldest is married to a wonderful French girl & they happily live in the French Alps.

John is a property professional with 40 years’ experience building small & medium sized businesses in East Anglia.

He has considerable experience of the responsibilities and frustrations of being an employer. He is used to battling unnecessary Government red tape that so often stems from rules made in Brussels but “gold plated” in the U.K.

Upon his appointment as an MEP John stood down as managing director of the commercial property investment company he started in 1983. He is now chairman, a role which leaves him free to work full time as an MEP across the East of England

1985 -1991 He was the joint founder of three other “start-up” businesses in East Anglia, together creating over 100 new jobs. He sold these businesses, which still successfully trade today.

2016 Rescued historic village pub that had unexpectedly closed and was under threat of being lost to the community forever. John jointly founded and chaired a “not for profit” Community Benefit Society that raised over £400,000 to buy and renovate as a community asset his village pub.

Magistrate/ Justice of the Peace – appointed in 1988 – (the  youngest in County at the time) Court Chairman from 1994 – 2009 when John took leave of absence to campaign full time.  He transferred to the Supplemental list in 2010.

Tribunal Member (Rating & Valuation appeals) since 1993. Chairman since 2001. Resigned as from 31st of December 2008 to concentrate on campaigning.

Charitable Housing Association Chairman: – Greenfields Community Housing Association. 2005-8. We took ownership of 8,000+ low cost rented homes from Braintree Council in Nov 07 and are investing £80M in improvements.


June 2017:  John appointed to serve as an MEP following the resignation of Vicky Ford MEP, upon her election as Member of Parliament for Chelmsford.

John is appointed as Conservative Delegation spokesman to the European Parliament’s Regional Development Committee (REGI) and also appointed to the Fisheries (PECH)  committees.

In  September 2018 as a mark of his tireless campaigning on Animal Welfare issues he was elected as Vice President of the Parliaments intergroup on Animal Welfare.

In October 2018 he published a book – “Animals Can’t Vote – But you can !” which has been critically acclaimed as an important contribution to Animal Welfare debate.

In February 2019 he was appointed as a Patron of the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation.

2014 Euro Election: John was selected by Party members to stand first behind the Party’s three re-standing MEPs on the regional list of seven Candidates. The top three re-standing MEPs are elected. As “cusp” candidate John is next in line.

2009 Euro Election: John topped the members postal ballot but national party policy ranked sitting MEPs and a new (excellent) woman Candidate head of him. John therefore accepted the “cusp” 4th place on the Party “list”, as a result John narrowly missed election.

40+ years record of loyal Party service, including serving as Association & Area Chairman. Also General Election Agent & Council Election Agent on five occasions.
